Traveling to Nantucket

Traveling to Nantucket

By sea

There are two cruiselines that offer frequent service to Nantucket, both departing from Hyannis. The schedules change with the season, offering more frequency in the summer.

The Steamship Authority provides two kinds of service. The traditional ferry transports vehicles and passengers and takes just over 2 hours. Whether you are staying for a week or a month, you may want to bring your own vehicle. If you are planning to bring a car to the island for your stay, it is wise to make a reservation well in advance - six months before travel is not too early. If you are unable to obtain a reservation for your specific times, you can opt to go on a waitlist or you can choose to put your vehicle on standby. There is a fee for driving your car on and off of the ferry - accompanied by no guarantee when your car will actually arrive. The Steamship Authority can give you information about how many people are on standby and an approximation of when your car might get on the ferry but please be aware that this method involves risk. The Steamship Authority also offers a fast ferry passenger-only service which takes one hour.

Hy-Line Cruises offers both traditional and fast ferry service, but carries only passengers. View schedules and fares at www.hylinecruises.com.

10 trip commuter books are available.for both cruislines.
