Fun February Facts for Nantucket Property

2011 is well underway and as we approach spring for Nantucket property, so we decided it would be fun to check out some fun facts for our beautiful island.  Local lore has it that…

  • The Steamship Authority bookings for 2011 are up 28%
  • Nantucket Island Resorts accommodation bookings are up 30%
  • Several new shops will be visible on Main Street and on Easy Street
  • Earlier rental bookings are trending toward a bold 2011 rental season
  • Though some events are already sold out, there is still time to purchase your passes for the Nantucket Wine Festival in May
  • Patron passes for the Nantucket Film Festival 2011 are available at a 10% discount until March 16th
  • Look for the new Cape Cod Five Cents Savings Bank branch that will be opening on West Creek Road in March
  • Whalers Hockey -With three wins this week, the Nantucket High School hockey team earned a berth in the Div. III playoffs in its first season as a varsity program
  • February has brought less than an inch of snow to Nantucket, while off-islanders are buried in more snow than they have seen for years, we can see the bare ground

There will also be several new restaurants opening their doors this year:

  1. Pazzo (by the guys at Lola) will be opening in the Sflogia space
  2. Six Degrees East (of Slip 14) will be replacing Cambridge Street
  3. Brickhouse Tavern (under the management of Michael Strugis) will be opening at the JC House
  4. Fussaro’s (Tommy Fussaro, long term Island resident) will be opening in the El Rincon space
  5. Chefs Amanda Lydon and Gabriel Frasca are taking over at 21 Federal
  6. Mark & Eithne Yelle will be opening in April at the Old Daily Breads location offering prepared foods and baked goods
  7. A new gourmet wine and cheese store will be located on South Wharf

The days are longer and the daffodils are beginning to pop up out of the frozen ground-a sure sign of Spring!

Jetties Beach in a Nantucket Nor’Easter

Nantucket has been experiencing astronomically high tides the last few days. Water has been flooding Easy Street, Oak Street and Brant Point. This photograph was taken by Justin Quinn yesterday afternoon at Jetties Beach.

Jetties Beach

For those who have never spent time on Nantucket in the off season, you may not recognize the Jetties Restaurant, which was boarded up more than two months ago for the winter. The awning that shades summer diners from the hot sun as they eat fried clams and lobsters is nothing but a metal skeleton and the sandy area where Nantucket summer house visitors sit in beach chairs, sipping beverages is under several inches of water.  What a difference a couple of months can make to the landscape!

Nantucket Winter Landscapes

Photographs of Nantucket are dominated by summer beaches, blooming hydrangeas, climbing roses on Sconset cottages and sailboats cruising Nantucket Harbor. However, Nantucket is no less beautiful in the winter months. When the ponds freeze over and the island gets a dusting of snow, the Nantucket landscape reveals a whole new face filled with new colors and textures.

Here are few photographs taken by Justine Paradis that display Nantucket’s winter scenes.

Oak Street

Rising waters in front of Windwalker Real Estate

The 2010 New Year rang in with a challenging, slow moving Nor’easter combined with an astronomically high tide that impacted Nantucket Town along the waterfront.  The Easy Street basin in front of Windwalker Real Estate on Oak Street never actually came over the bank but the high tide came up through the storm drains and flooded parts of Brant Point, the Dreamland lot, Easy Street, Oak Street, and Broad Street along the “Strip”. These were the highest flood waters we have seen in a long time. The noon tides were dramatic but fortunately the wind came around to the west during the evening and averted even higher flood waters forecasted for the midnight tide.
