Ordinarily when the field behind Nantucket residences goes up in flames, it would be a cause for concern but prescribed fire is implemented on numerous properties across Nantucket Island owned by the Nantucket Conservation Foundation, the Nantucket Islands Land Bank Commission, and the Massachusetts Audubon Society as a means of maintaining many species of plants and animals. With over 50% of the island in conservation this is a common sight here.

These photos were taken on Wednesday, March 17th, 2010, on the Land Bank land known as the Gardner land off Hummock Pond Road in Cisco.

This was a nearly perfect day on Nantucket with no wind, not a cloud in the sky and warm temperatures…surely this must be another  harbinger of spring.
